Both for the transportation of water for human consumption and for conductions intended for non-potable water, we talk about a thermoplastic which surpasses other materials and that, little by little, has started to be used with more diffusionin the industry. Spain is one of the main manufacturers of PVC pipes in the European market, adding that to the conductions for supply, irrigation, sanitation and wastewatertreatment networks. United States, Germany and Holland have a lengthy trajectoryin the use of PVC pipes in systems of vacuum sanitation of wastewaters, at hriving technic and that, little by little, it is starting to appear in our country. In this case, the predominatingpipes are the ones made of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U), which are normally buried and which doesn’t need a protection sleeve. The different types of the PVC which are usually used for the treatments of waters which are not intended for human consumption are the (PVC-U) and the oriented PVC (PVC-O). There isa very wide range both of PVC pipes and fittings to offer complete solutions in different applications related to the transportation of water. The pipes have a fork of nominal diameters which goes from 12 to 1,200 mm, with lengths which can reach up to 6 metres and nominal gravity pressures and up to 25 bars. Reductions, grafts, elbows, manholes, inspection holes and valves are fittings with which they are completed. We can see here the several advantages of the use of PVC pipes for the wastewater treatment: Due to its low celerity, it offers an outstanding performance before awater hammer. . Due to its flexibility, it supports very well the crushing loads. . It has a low loss of water, due to the smoothness of its internal surface. . It impedes the formation of deposits and incrustations in the internal section. . It gets a higher flow for the same value of external diameter . With a smaller thickness, it supports high tensions of design. . As it weight less, its transportation is simple and it is cheaper than in the case of other materials. Also, that reduced weight makes easy its handling and installation . It has a uniformity of the complete system in the same material, either it is about pipes, fittings and other elements, which guarantees the higher possible tightness . Due to the characteristics of the PVC, it doesn’t get oxide nor it suffers corrosion, two factors which shorten the useful life of the conductions of other materials. . It is fire-resistant and self-extinguishing. Under the effect of the fire, it doesn’t melt which impedes the formation of drops of material in combustion. Besides of an excellent relation quality-price and some very interesting uses, the PVC pipes contribute to the sustainability of the environment, as it is about a recyclable material. In its fabrication and transformation not only it is used lesser limited resources and energy like in the case of other materials but that, besides, its use supposes an energy saving and a lower level of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere.
